Author of A House in the Country
Welcome to David Cheatham's Author Website!
I'm David Cheatham—writer, storyteller, and renovator of both homes and histories. Here, you’ll find a blend of tales that reflect my passion for discovering truths and weaving stories that resonate with heart, humor, and the complexities of life.
My first book, A House in the Country, captures the fourteen-year journey my wife, Eleanor, and I took to restore a seven-generation family home in rural Alabama. It’s more than just a memoir about home renovation—it's a story of perseverance, personal growth, and reckoning with the past. Inspired by Marcel Proust’s insight that "the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes," this site is a space where I’ll share that journey and much more.
In addition to A House in the Country, I’m currently working on my next project, All Bottled Up: Surviving Two Decades Inside Coke's Global Headquarters and Other Corporate Misadventures. This book offers a humorous and revealing look at my years in corporate life, full of lessons, laughs, and, yes, misadventures.

“Well,” I say, “We did it, don’t you think? We’ve restored the old house and taken our leisure in the country.”
“Yes, I do,” Eleanor says. “Of course, it was ten times harder than I expected.”
When David and Eleanor Cheatham stood before the neglected ruins of the Molett House in rural Alabama, they knew one thing for sure: they wanted to save it. Though no one had lived there for decades, the house had been in Eleanor’s family for seven generations. The couple had been talking about having a country house for years. And here was one that could be theirs—for free—if they could move it and restore it.
It seemed simple enough. And David and Eleanor were game to try.
